Sony TVs get built-in YouView as LG's £60,000 105-inch telly goes on sale

Sony's improving your view by building YouView into its UK TVs, granting access to a range of on-demand channels through the TV guide.

YouView, launched in 2012, is a TV service that combines on-demand viewing of previously aired programmes with its live TV listings, letting you scroll back through time to watch shows that have already been broadcast with the help of an Internet connection.

The benefit there is that you don't have to flick through lots of different smart TV apps to find on-demand viewing from the likes of BBC iPlayer, 4oD, ITV Player and Demand 5, making streaming TV more accessible.

Sony will be the first TV maker to team up with YouView, which becomes available in the summer on a total of 20 Sony goggleboxes, including 12 that boast a 4K resolution.

The YouView TVs are unlikely to be as fully featured as normal YouView, which usually comes in the form of a DVR box that contains a hard drive, letting you record programmes for offline viewing. That feature seems unlikely to make it to Sony's TVs, but I've contacted Sony to ask whether any of their sets include a hard drive for storing downloads, and I'll update this story if I hear back.

YouView costs nothing once you've stumped up cash for the (admittedly pricey) box, and is offered for free by some Internet providers as a sweetener when you sign up for their broadband packages.

LG's ludicrous 105-inch TV on sale

Meanwhile, oil barons or those happy to sell an organ may be interested in LG's latest offering -- a 105-inch curved TV that's on sale for a staggering £60,000.

First spied at the beginning of last year, LG's new toy gets a wall-filling 5K screen that packs 11 million pixels. There's bad news, however, for Amazon Prime members -- this monstrous machine is only available to buy from the technology department of venerable Knightsbridge department store Harrods.
