Sony to license WildTangent technology

Web graphics company WildTangent Technology says Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment is licensing its technology that enables Web developers to create multimedia content via the Web using standard scripting languages. The software, dubbed Web Driver, aims to bring graphics and interactive content similar to those found on PC games such as "Doom" and "Quake." The Redmond, Wash.-based company said the Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment division, which comprises Sony Pictures Imageworks, Sony Online Entertainment and Screenblast as well as the studio's online marketing Web sites, will use the Web Driver technology. In April, WildTangent received $34 million in its third round of funding from investors that included Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment, Accenture Technology Ventures, ATI, Millennium Technology Ventures, Washington Mutual and IDG. WildTangent's technology uses Java to access Windows PCs' DirectX graphics capabilities.
