PS4 gets a Rest Mode bug fix

Sony's newest update aims to fix a problem from a previous update that prevented the PlayStation 4 from coming out of Rest Mode.

Sony has rolled out a new update for the PlayStation 4 that should squash a major bug caused by the last update.

Triggered on October 28, version 2.0 of the PlayStation 4 firmware introduced a number of welcome new features. But it also added one that wasn't so welcome. The update prevents the console from reawakening when it's put into standby mode, aka Rest Mode. It also created issues using and uploading videos to YouTube. A number of PS4 users apparently complained of the problems, prompting Sony to promise a bug fix as soon as possible.

That bug fix is now available via update version 2.01, according to a tweet from Chris English, community manager at PlayStation Europe. Owen confirmed that the update does address the issue that users faced in powering up the system from Rest Mode. But his tweet didn't reveal if it also resolves the YouTube bug or adds any other features or fixes.

Until PS4 owners receive and can install the new update, your safest option is to select the "turn PS4 off" option instead of using Rest Mode to put your console to sleep. If your PS4 does hang, try not to unplug the unit as you can damage the system's data.

Sony had touted the 2.0 update as one of its most feature-packed.

"This update adds unique, forward-looking features like Share Play, and addresses some of the most highly requested features from the community including YouTube integration, USB music player, ability to find players you may know, sorting options for PS4′s game library, and themes that change the look of your home screen," Sony said in a blog posted on October 27. "This is the biggest update we've delivered to date for PS4."

Sony did not immediately respond to CNET's request for comment on the new update.
