Sony this week announced two new models of the PSX, a Japan-only gadget that combines the company's PlayStation 2 game console with a DVD recorder and other entertainment functions. The new DESR-7700 and DESR-570 have similar specifications to the first PSX models but include new functions for converting video into the MPEG-4 format for viewing on portable devices, including Sony's PlayStation Portable. Both models are set to go on sale in Japan next month.
The PSX was considered an important test of Sony's convergence strategy when the company introduced it in late 2003. But the devices have sold poorly to date, prompting Sony to delay plans to introduce them in other regions and fostering widespread speculation last month that Sony planned to discontinue the product line.
