Small labels sign onto Pressplay

Pressplay, a joint venture between Sony and Vivendi Universal, has signed licensing deals with six independent record labels: Madacy, Navarre, OWIE, Razor & Tie, Roadrunner and Rounder. Pressplay, which is expected to launch its online music subscription service this fall, said the deal will expand its music library with songs from artists such as the Dead Kennedys, Billie Holiday, Alison Krauss, Kenny Rogers and 2 Live Crew. On Tuesday, Pressplay said it licensed Alliance Entertainment's database of songs, albums and artist information. Pressplay also has tracks from EMI Recorded Music, which licensed its catalog of tunes to Pressplay in early October despite its association with MusicNet, a rival subscription effort. Pressplay will be carried on Yahoo and the Microsoft Network.
