Short Take: US West makes long distance bid

US West has asked Arizona regulators to endorse its bid to offer long distance service in that state. The company hopes that state approval will smooth its eventual application to the Federal Communications Commission. Only the FCC can approve the Baby Bell's final application, however. The company is currently barred from offering long distance service to its own local customers.
