Short Take: State bill proposes tax break for ISPs that filter

California could give Net access providers a tax break for supplying parents with filtering programs to block certain online material--or if they install "gateway scanning devices" on servers that bar access to illegal obscene content or child pornography. Assemblyman Mike Machado's (D-Linden) Child Safety Internet Act would let ISPs deduct up to $50,000 for installing products that let parents control and monitor children's access to Web sites, email, newsgroups, and chat rooms.
