Short Take: Sony eyes data communications venture

Sony may join with Toyota Motor and Internet Initiative Japan (IIJ), a major ISP, to enter the data telecommunications service business. The trio have agreed in principle to form a joint venture, according to a Sony spokesman quoted by Reuters, and will establish a preparatory company capitalized at 100 million yen and owned 40 percent by IIJ and 30 percent each by Sony and Toyota. As early as November, the new company may apply to the Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications for permission to begin operations.
