Short take: Singapore hard disk production to grow in 1998

Singapore's hard drive sector grew by 13 percent in 1997, according to the country's Economic Development Board (EDB), which predicted further growth in 1998. But Seagate Technology will cut 1,800 jobs, or about ten percent of its workforce there, because of surplus inventory and price competition, Reuters reported. Other sectors of Singapore's electronics industry, like semiconductors and communications, are also expected to grow in 1998, the EDB said.
