Short Take: SBC Communications added to the Dow index

Local phone service provider SBC Communications was added to the Dow Jones Industrial Average, among Chief executive Edward Whitacre said that the addition reflects SBC's "expanding leadership role within the communications industry." SBC recently completed its multibillion-dollar merger with Ameritech.
