An industry consortium will release version 2.0 of its Intelligent Input/Output (I2O) specification to the public on Monday, the I2O Special Interest Group said. The standard, backed by Intel, Microsoft, and others, is designed to make it easier for companies to create the software layer called a "driver" that lets a computer communicate with components such as network cards or disk drives. Version 1.0 was released in November 1998 and developers have had access to version 2.0 since May. "It didn't go underground, it just didn't get as much attention as early in the game as we anticipated," said a spokesperson for the I2O project.
