Short Take: Net tax panel raises privacy issues

Concerns about online consumer privacy were raised today during a panel discussion on federal Internet tax policy. The 19-member panel, titled the Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce, is charged by Congress with examining the effects that taxes, tariffs, and bureaucracy have on the e-commerce sector. Some proposals submitted to the committee raised panelists' concerns because they advocated the use of tracking software to determine consumers' addresses in order to tax them in the proper jurisdiction.
