According to a report to be published in Editor & Publisher on December 2, Internet-based classified advertising may seriously impact revenue from traditional newspapers in as little as three years. The report concludes that "if the newspaper industry does not respond to the threats posed by electronic competitors creating new niche products and services, serious injury is certain." U.S. papers derive 37 percent of their total advertising income from classifieds.
