Short Take: Net access fund in demand

More than 30,000 schools and libraries have requested up to $2.02 billion in federal discounts on Net access, reports the Schools and Libraries Corporation (SLC), which is administering the so-called e-rate program set up by the Federal Communications Commission. Despite Vice President Al Gore's pledge to back the program, it may not be able to dole out all the discounts. A group of senators has challenged the FCC's authority to create the SLC.
