Microsoft announced its DirectSound
3D 5 specification is now an open standard for independent hardware vendors
(IHVs), encouraging a joint development effort to expand 3D audio
playback. Microsoft hopes the 3D PC audio, a DirectX API, will make consumer PC audio a more
realistic, interactive experience. Users can download the DirectSound 3D hardware
emulation layer, and a new version is expected next June.
