Short Take: Macromedia announces Director 7

Macromedia has announced the release of both Director 7, the upgrade to its multimedia authoring product, and Shockwave 7, the upgrade to its player. Director 7 has a new playback engine; pre-coded "behaviors" that describe various animation and interactivity features; and support for standards including HTTPS, or secure HTTP; XML. It also includes updated Java support. The products will be available next month for an estimated $999. Upgrades are $499; standalone Director 7 costs $449.
