Lucent Technologies said it has created a processor for Internet equipment that nearly triples the number of voice and data calls that Internet service providers and telephone companies can process. Lucent said the digital signal processor chip can handle up to 16 simultaneous voice and data calls and can support 56K modems, voice and fax over Internet Protocol, ISDN, and wireless data. Lucent will start producing the chip in the third quarter 1999. The chip costs $120 each in quantities of 25,000.
