Short Take: Intel opens Irish plant

Intel opened its first European plant to use the advanced 0.25 micron production process, and said it would convert an existing plant. "Fab 14," based in Leixlip, Ireland, will make advanced Pentium II, Xeon, and Celeron processors. The fab cost $1.3 billion to build and equip. Fab 10, located on the same Dublin-area site, will convert next year. The Santa-Clara, California, company has three 0.25 micron fabs in the the United States and has shipped the majority of 0.25 micron chips in the marketplace.
