Short Take: Intel cuts prices on Pentium III, Celeron chips

Intel cut prices on its latest Pentium III chips and its lower-priced Celeron models Sunday, the company said. Because of manufacturing gains, the 600-MHz Pentium III price was cut 8 percent from $669 to $615; the Pentium III price dropped 13 percent from $487 to $423. In addition, to try to help computer makers prepare models for the holiday season, Intel cut Celeron prices as much as 15 percent. In another effort to spur demand, Intel also began an $150 million advertising campaign to promote the Internet uses for its chips.
