IBM's sales in China increased 50 percent in 1997, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. Growth was uneven among its product lines, from PCs to mainframes. Also last year, IBM China established a joint venture in Shenzhen for manufacturing hard drive equipment, as well as several branches offices. IBM employs over 1,600 people in Asia's second-largest market.
