Short Take: GI, Arris earn cable modem OK

Cable modems by General Instrument and Arris Interactive have been certified as Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS)-compliant by CableLabs, the cable industry's research and standards body. GI and Arris join 3Com, Toshiba, and Thomson Consumer Electronics with standards-compliant cable modems. The DOCSIS standard is expected to allow consumers to buy and install their own modems, cutting costs for operators and allowing increased access to cable modems.
