Short Take: FCC chief of staff stepping down

John Nakahata, the Federal Communications Commissions's chief of staff, will step down by October 31. Nakahata, who assumed his current position upon William Kennard's succeeding Reed Hundt as FCC chairman in November 1997, played a key role in important FCC policy decisions following the 1996 Telecommunications Act, notably the attempt to open local phone companies to competition by requiring them to lease parts of their networks to would-be rivals. That FCC policy is now before the Supreme Court.
