Short Take: Covad offers first consumer DSL service

Covad Communications, a competitive local phone company and a high-speed digital subscriber line (DSL) provider, announced its first consumer offering using ADSL. Pricing starts at $39 a month, comparable with recent price cuts by Pacific Bell and Bell Atlantic. Until now, Covad and its competitors have targeted only small- and medium-sized businesses and telecommuters. Covad's new service will be available to nearly 40 ISPs on a wholesale basis in more than 50 cities by the end of the year.
