Compaq Computer and modem manufacturer Hayes Microcomputer Products have announced support for K56flex, Lucent Technologies' and Rockwell Semiconductor Systems' interoperable modem protocol. Compaq and Hayes have incorporated Lucent's 56-kbps modem chip sets in products to be released this quarter. The modem technology connects personal computers to the Internet over regular phone lines by as much as two times the current speed, but this can only be achieved when the user and ISP modems are compatible.
