Cisco Systems unveiled two new switches in the Catalyst 5000 family, one intended for fast-growing corporate network backbones and a second targeted at workgroups. Shipping now, the two models support both frame and cell-based pipes, including most LAN technologies, as well as ATM (asynchronous transfer mode). The backbone 5500 chassis includes 13 slots, with prices starting at $6,995; the 5002 workgroup switch includes two slots and costs $1,295.
