Short Take: California bill calls for library Net filtering

California public libraries will have to adopt a policy that deals with minors' access to "harmful matter" on the Net, if a new state bill becomes law. Republican Rep. George Runner's legislation would only apply to libraries that receive state funds for Net connections. The policies would have to be posted near each Net terminal. But unlike a similar federal proposal, Runner's bill doesn't require that libraries install software to filter online smut.
