Short Take: Cablevision rolls out Net access

Cablevision Systems wired some 15,000 homes on Long Island, New York, with high-speed cable modem Internet access today. The service--which requires a set-top box and carries a monthly service charge--boasts download speeds that are as much as 50 times faster than regular telephone connections. Cablevision and other industry companies have scaled back some deployment plans this year. Yet, America's sixth largest cable operator said it will expand the service to some 150,000 homes in New York and Connecticut by this time next year.
