Short Take: Cable & Wireless to offer DSL, VPNs

Cable & Wireless, the British telecommunications company, is expected to launch its high-speed digital subscriber line service for businesses in the United States today, according to a source familiar with the company. The DSL service, through an alliance with NorthPoint Communications, will be available in 15 cities by year-end. Cable & Wireless also is expected this week to announce a highly-customized Web hosting service and an Internet Protocol-based virtual private network (VPN) service with a managed firewall for security, which will not be available until the fourth quarter.
