Short Take: ATM protocol ratified

The ATM Forum announced the final ratification of two key enabling protocol technologies that allow high-speed ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) pipes to integrate with routers and LAN technologies. The organization announced the completion of MPOA (multi-protocol over ATM) 1.0 and LANE (local area network emulation) services 2.0. Thes first protocol allows ATM to be tied to router-based Internetworks running a variety of protocols over the wide area; the second integrates with LAN-based gear running workgroup network technologies such as Ethernet.
