Short Take: AT&T, MCI, others in $375 million cable deal

AT&T has signed a $375 million agreement with MCI Communications, Sprint, and some 30 other telecom firms to build the Americas II Cable System, a fiber-optic undersea cable linking the U.S. with the Caribbean and South America. Expected to be in service by September 1999, the new system is ten times the capacity of the present Americas I system, allowing the transmission of more than 600,000 simultaneous calls.
