America Online has filed a shelf registration with the SEC for up to $1 billion in debt securities and common and preferred stock. Once effective, it will permit the online giant, from time to time, to offer and sell various types of securities. The Dulles, Virginia-based company said it will use the net proceeds for general corporate purposes, and to gain additional flexibility in accessing the capital markets.
