America Online announced that Daniel F. Akerson, chairman and chief executive officer of Nextel Communications, was elected to the company's board of directors at its annual stockholder meeting. Akerson fills the seat left vacant by AOL cofounder James Kimsey, who is stepping down from the board. Prior to joining Nextel, Akerson served as chairman and CEO of General Instrument, a technology company owned by Forstmann Little, a private investment firm.
