Short Take: Amazon introduces writing award
Seeking to bolster its presence in the literary world, Amazon.com today said it launched a contest for aspiring writers called the PEN/Amazon.com Short Story Award. Offering the award in collaboration with the online book giant is the New York-based PEN American Center, an esteemed coalition of more than 2,700 American writers and editors. The contest, which ends March 24, welcomes unpublished writers to submit original short stories for the chance to be read nationally--published in the Boston Book Review and on Amazon's site--and to win $10,000. Judging the short stories are three highly regarded PEN writers: David Guterson, Jamaica Kincaid and Sherman Alexie.
