Short film about video gaming packs emotional punch

A short film, called Escape, follows a young girl who retreats into The Legend of Zelda to escape a life of bullying and an abusive home.

For many of us, the world of fiction provides a reprieve from the pressures of day-to-day life, a way to relax our brains and — in the case of video gaming, in particular — live as a hero for a little while.

Escape, winner of the Asian Film Festival of Dallas 2012 in the Student Shorts category, reveals a much darker side. Our silent heroine Danni has nowhere to escape to; at school and at home, her life is miserable. Her one place of solace is Hyrule.

It's an extraordinarily powerful piece of work, and one, we suspect, that many will feel deeply.
