Billionaire philanthropist and former Meta Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg donated $3 million to the American Civil Liberties Union to help fight for abortion access in the US, the advocacy group said Tuesday.

Sandberg officially stepped down as Facebook parent company Meta's COO in September after 14 years, but still serves on the company's board of directors.

Her contribution will be distributed over the next three years to support the ACLU's efforts to fight abortion bans in courts and legislatures across the country, according to the ACLU.  The group's partnership with Sandberg will help the organization educate voters on judicial candidates' records on abortion, it noted.

"With Sheryl's support on abortion rights, we can kick it into overdrive and redouble the fight for abortion access in the states," ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero said. "We will educate voters on where their elected representatives stand on this important issue and turn the abortion issue into a referendum on candidates' courage and character."
