Early adopters are always seeking an ever more immersive home-entertainment experience. They buy plush chairs with built-in butt-shakers, surround-sound systems, and giant TVs. They now have the opportunity to go beyond just lowering the lights, because Philips Hue is about to get its "Sharknado" on.
Philips Hue is a connected smart bulb that allows minute control over brightness and color. It can also work with apps that let it pulse to music, so it's a small step to imagine it working in sync with a movie. To get it to function with "Sharknado" and "Sharknado 2," you need to download the Syfy Sync app for iOS and pair it with your Hue bulbs.
The app listens for audio cues from the movies and sends commands to the bulbs. In a press release that's almost as heart-pounding as the shark-infested cinematic masterpieces, Syfy and Philips say, "Fans will then be enveloped in the onscreen action through ambient lighting effects as the bulbs change colors to reflect the increasingly stormy weather conditions, chainsaw-induced shark carnage and more throughout the two movies."
So, if you've ever wondered how a chainsaw scene involving a flying shark would translate to light through a smart bulb, this is your chance to find out exactly what it looks like. Arif Quraishi, vice president of marketing, sales, and strategy at Philips, promises this experience will take "a further bite out of the audience's imagination," which actually sounds slightly painful.
"Sharknado 2: The Second One" will premiere on the Syfy channel on July 30. If you can't wait that long, then just push play on a copy of the first "Sharknado" and dive right into the Hue lighting experience.
Now, the only thing this still needs is a snappy '50s movie-gimmick name, like Hue-O-Vision or Shark-A-Rama. Or Hue-Shark-O-Vision-Rama.
