SGI to decide soon on Asian layoffs

SINGAPORE--High-end computer maker SGI will decide by the end of September whether to cut its Asia-Pacific staff, following further losses. "We are currently having internal discussions to streamline our operations," SGI Asia-Pacific Vice President Jansen Ek said. SGI announced in April that it planned to lay off 1,000 workers as part of its efforts to break even in the next few months. The company posted a net loss of $141 million for its fiscal third quarter, ending March 2001. Staff writer Nawaz Marican reported from Singapore.
