Since the release of Security Update 2004-02-23, we've had very few reports of problems, which is usually a good indication that most users who have applied the update have been successful and have not experienced problems. The few reports of problems we've received so far have been either non-specific or sufficiently varied that we suspect other issues may be the cause. The issues that have been reported include:

  • A PowerBook that will not sleep automatically
  • Inability to start up (startup stalls at the gray Apple screen)
  • Inability to start up (screen goes blank at login screen -- fixed by running fsck in single-user mode)
  • Inability to actually install the update at all -- one such report due to the installer not finding any disks, the other due to the installer stating that "This computer does not meet the requirements for this update. This software cannot be installed on this computer."

As always, we recommend that users repair disk permissions, using Disk Utility when booted from the volume being repaired, after installing system updates. It's also a good idea to check your hard drive using Disk Utility's Repair Disk function or a utility such as DiskWarrior before installing system updates.
