Samsung releases combo device

Samsung released on Thursday a combination handheld computer/cell phone that uses the Palm operating system. The SPH-I300 will run on the CDMA (code division multiple access) Sprint PCS network in the United States, though the device will first come out only in Sprint stores in parts of New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania. The device weighs six ounces and features 8MB of memory, a 256-color screen, caller ID and voice-activated dialing. The SPH-I300 offers Web browsing and e-mail access through the Openwave Mobile Browser 4.1 and Palm's wireless Web clipping. It also features Handspring's Blazer browser. The device will cost $499 at retail or $449 for business customers who are part of Sprint's volume program. Last year, Samsung first announced its intention to create a Palm OS-based device. This week, a Samsung executive told Reuters that the company will also come out with a combo device next year that uses Microsoft's Pocket PC operating system.
