Samsung Galaxy Tape tablet: Tale of the Tape
Samsung is set to take on the iPad with the Galaxy Tape (or possibly Tab), a tablet that's actually is a giant smartphone
Samsung is set to make the an entry to the increasingly-crowded tablet computer market. The Samsung Galaxy Tape shares its name and Android operating system with its smartphone stablemates, and even makes phone calls.
The Tape sports a 7-inch Super AMOLED screen, and will pack the tasty treat Android 2.2 Froyo with Samsung's TouchWiz front end. Critics were being facetious when they accused the iPad of being a giant iPhone, but Samsung has embraced the philosophy: the Tape is a part of the Galaxy smartphone family with the Portal and Galaxy S. And the Tape will make phone calls, as an icon on the home screen reveals.
It will be powered by an A8 chip clocked at 1.2GHz, according to Vietnamese Web site Tinh te. Other specs include 16GB of memory and a MicroSD slot for up to 32GB extra storage.
Details are sketchy at best -- some reports call it the Galaxy Tab after the above picture was leaked, then deleted on Samsung's South African twitter feed. With the continued success of the iPad and the subsequent rejuvenation of the tablet market we expect to see how the Tape measures up by the end of the year.
