Sabre offering wireless travel alerts

Sabre, which provides technology for the travel industry and operates the United States' largest ticket reservation system, said Wednesday it would provide up-to-date flight information to travelers via cell phones and pagers. The company said travelers using its Virtuallythere.com site would be able to receive text messages alerting them to gate changes, delays or cancellations. Sabre, which has a 70 percent stake in online travel site Travelocity.com, said it added the feature to help people get updated information at "this critical time." Other online travel sites offer similar services, such as Orbitz, which kept its customers informed via a recorded message service accessible by phone after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York and on the Pentagon.
