The University of South Dakota will require all first-year students to purchase a Palm handheld, the school said Wednesday. However, the university's foundation will underwrite most of the cost of the handhelds. Students will pay a small assessment for four semesters to pay part of the cost. "We must provide a learning environment using the latest technology so our students can take advantage of the benefits of anytime, anywhere learning to better prepare for the future," USD President James Abbott said in a statement.
A Palm representative said the university in Vermillion, S.D., is not getting a volume discount on the handhelds and has not yet decided which models it will purchase.
