'Rogue One' reshoots promise to add classic Star Wars adventure
Disney reportedly demands several weeks of additional shooting to lighten the mood of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."
Star Wars is famous for its dark side, but it's the light side of the Force Disney is asking to see more of after viewing a first cut of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."
Apparently, Disney executives were not excited about the first cut of "Rogue One" from director Gareth Edwards, and have asked for additional reshoots for the upcoming Star Wars movie, according to a Page Six article on May 20 in the New York Post.
As the first Star Wars spinoff movie, "Rogue One" takes place between Episode III ("Revenge of the Sith") and Episode IV ("A New Hope"), where resistance fighters work against all odds to intercept Death Star plans.
Starring actors Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker and Diego Luna, the first "Rogue One" trailer showed a much darker tone to a "Star Wars" film that harkens back to Episode V ("The Empire Strikes Back.")
The reshoots goal will be to add a sense of adventure and fun that matches the tone of the original trilogy of Star Wars films.
"This is the closest thing to a prequel ever," a source told The Hollywood Reporter Tuesday regarding "Rogue One." "This takes place just before A New Hope and leads up to the 10 minutes before that classic film begins. You have to match the tone!"
Of course, reshoots are a common occurrence in the film industry. In fact, many past Star Wars films have undergone reshoots including "Revenge of the Sith." These reshoot stories from The New York Post and The Hollywood Reporter shouldn't be causing any real fan panic about the upcoming "Rogue One."
"The filmmaking team and the studio always anticipated additional shooting and second unit work to make the film the absolute best it can be, and the actors were aware there would be additional shooting," an unnamed Disney source told The New York Post.
"Coming off 'The Force Awakens,' there's an incredibly high bar for this movie and we have a responsibility to the franchise and to the fans to deliver the best possible movie we can," the Disney source added.
Fan worried about the reshoots affecting the movie release dates can relax for now. "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is still scheduled to hit theaters on December 16 in the US and UK and December 15 in Australia.
Disney did not immediately reply to our request for comment on the planned reshoots.
