Rogue Wave Software is teaching old databases new tricks.

The company today released a new mapping tool that automatically connects object-oriented applications with data from relational databases.

RW-Metro, now available, saves C++ developers from the difficult and mind-numbing task of having to write the mapping code themselves, said Gillian Webster, vice president of marketing for Rogue Wave, of Boulder, Colorado.

"A lot of businesses have built their applications on relational databases. Object databases haven't been highly embraced by the corporate marketplace. And what's happening is developers are building all these object-oriented applications without real tools to get to the relational databases," said Webster. "Our RW-Metro bridges that gap."

RW-Metro, which costs $3,995, supports Oracle, Sybase, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, Informix Software and ODBC databases.

The tool runs on Windows 95 and NT, and a variety of Unix operating systems, including Sun Solaris, HP-UX and IBM AIX, Webster said.
