Road Runner to enter new markets
The high-speed cable modem-based service plans to announce tomorrow that its has entered the Pennsylvania Net access market and will launch in Los Angeles this summer.
Wednesday's launch marks the first time Pennsylvania residents will be able to access the broadband data-over-cable service. Road Runner will be deployed by Cablecomm, a cable system operated by Fanch Communications in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
The service will be available to nearly 42,000 Cablecomm customers in 24 communities. Another 50,000 homes will be able to access the service by the end of the third quarter, the company said.
The move into the Los Angeles area, through the L.A. division of Time Warner Cable, puts Road Runner ahead of its chief competitor @Home Network in that city. @Home is currently not available in Los Angeles.
The service should roll out in Orange County and the West San Fernando Valley areas by June. Los Angeles' South Bay region is expected to see high-speed Net access in the fall, after network upgrades are completed.
Road Runner, currently available to more than seven million homes, serves 180,000 customers. Road Runner is a joint venture between Time Warner Cable, MediaOne Group, Microsoft, Compaq Computer, and Advance/Newhouse.
