RIM shows off BlackBerry with Wi-Fi

The new BlackBerry device can support VoIP over an 802.11b-based wireless network.

Research In Motion demonstrated at the Gartner ITXPO Symposium on Monday a BlackBerry device that can support voice over Internet Protocol over an 802.11b-based wireless network. The 7270 Blackberry device can send and receive voice and data over a wireless network. The Waterloo, Ontario-based company initially discussed the gadget's capabilities late last year. RIM said its BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.0 software now includes wireless networking support. The BlackBerry device will be commercially available early next year. RIM has been testing prototypes of the device internally and will test it with customers starting next month.

Current BlackBerry devices send and receive data over cellular networks.
