Billboard has broken a story on the U.S. Department of Justice opening an investigation into record labels' digital music pricing, following New York State's lead.

According to the story, label sources expect subpoenas from the DOJ within days, and said that the investigation seemed to be focusing on the same pricing issues as New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer.

Label sources have previously said that Spitzer is looking into whether there has been any collusion on wholesale pricing in the record companies' digital download businesses.
