Remove your iPhone data plan

Ben Wilson
In an unexpected move, AT&T is now allowing you to remove the unlimited EDGE data feature from your monthly iPhone service plan. Dropping the service will save you $20 a month, but you'll lose several features in the process. Not only will you be restricted to using Wi-Fi to access the Internet, but you'll also lose the iPhone's visual voice-mail feature and the ability to send or receive your free allotment of text messages. That's a lot to lose, but if you avoid using EDGE in favor of Wi-Fi and don't mind saying goodbye to visual voice mail, you might find it a fair trade for the chance to save $240 a year. And to avoid paying individually for every sent and received text message, you can always add one of AT&T's standard SMS packages to your service plan.
