Qwest Communications International said Thursday that it has signed a multiyear agreement to provide eBay with Web hosting services. The deal is part of eBay's "continuing strategy to diversify its Web hosting functions," Qwest said in a statement Thursday. In late March, eBay signed anwith Intel for similar services; it also uses Exodus, Sprint and AboveNet--a subsidiary of Metromedia Fiber Network--as other hosting providers.
A Qwest CyberCenter in Sunnyvale, Calif., will be used to provide the hosting for the San Jose, Calif.-based auction site's network of some 46 million registered members. "The idea is this gives us flexibility in terms of geographical areas," eBay spokesman Kevin Pursglove said.
