Quote of the day: Photo sharing a 'social medium'

From the beginning, Flickr looked at photo sharing as a communication medium, not just a way to sell prints, co-founder says.

In a video interview at the Syndicate Conference in San Francisco, Flickr co-founder Catrina Fake said the site early on took a than other photo sites already out there.

"Photo sharing was seen as a loss leader for photo finishing services. The business was all about a funnel to get people to spend their money on printing. Photo sharing was not seen as really valuable in and of itself," she said. "We approached photography as kind of like a social medium, as a way to communicate with people."
